Welcome to "I'm Stumped!"
Keeping a forest healthy is no simple task and there are many things to consider. If you see things happening in and or around the forest and are curious to find out what it is and/or why it is happening, send us your question using the "I'm Stumped" form. We will have an appropriate knowledgeable expert respond to your questions and queries.
Following are a few examples of questions frequently fielded by Forest Saskatchewan: Why does the Forest Industry use clear cuts as a method of harvesting? The forests of Saskatchewan are even-aged boreal forests that regenerate naturally through large scale disturbances such as wildfire. Clear cutting is a harvest method that most closely emulates the natural patterns seen through large scale disturbances. Therefore, clear cutting is the most effective way to regenerate our forests in Saskatchewan. Who approves and ensures that the Forest Industry is only harvesting what it should and how it should? The Ministry of Environment is responsible for regulating the forest industry in Saskatchewan. The Minister has mandated that responsibility to the Forest Service Branch for the approval of plans, issuance of licenses and to carry out associated regulatory compliance. The practice of forestry in Saskatchewan is governed and monitored by the Association of Saskatchewan Forestry Professionals; anyone practicing forestry whether from industry or government is required to be a member of the association. What causes wildfires in our forest and what can we do to avoid them? Approximately half of the fires in the province are caused by human activities and the other half are caused by lightning. Although wildfires cannot be avoided, a significant number of fires could be reduced with increased public awareness and education. Forest management that maximizes sustainable harvest will reduce the risk of fire associated with aging forests and long-term fire suppression. |
