APR 01, 2024 By Carl Neggers, CEO - Forest Saskatchewan Branching out Cooperation and collaboration are the basis for sustainable forest management There are more than 34.3 million hectares of forest with the Saskatchewan commercial forest zone comprising 11.7 million hectares of provincial forest. The Saskatchewan forest industry is on target to generate close to $2 billion in annual revenues, and supporting more than 8,000 jobs in Northern Saskatchewan. More than 75 per cent of the province’s primary forest products are exported—67 per cent of lumber and OSB are shipped to the United States, and 67 per cent of pulp heads to Asia. Managing it all However, the forest industry is not the only interest in Saskatchewan’s provincial forest. There are many varying interests such as ecological, species and habitat protection, traditional indigenous uses, recreational uses, trapping and fishing and many more. This makes sustainable forest management a complex challenge and requires that all interest groups cooperate and collaborate to be successful in managing and maintaining this important provincial resource. With all the moving parts within the provincial forest it is imperative that our industry reach out to various forest users to ensure that we are connecting and communicating in a manner that achieves shared results. Saskatchewan’s forests cover a vast expanse of the province, but the magnitude of the details that classify, measure and describe our forests is even more grand, making technology vital to forestry professionals.
Just looking at a single tree, there are many pieces of information to be known about it, starting with its species, height and diameter.
Forestry professionals regularly gather details about the trees in a forest, plus additional information about the ecosystem in which they exist. That includes being aware and considerate of other vegetation as well as water, wildlife and more. Each has its own set of data that can be collected. Opinion: Deforestation in Canada and other fake news
As the author of a book on deforestation in Canada, I feel I have some qualification to comment on recent claims made by an alliance of environmental groups that the federal government is “spinning” the truth on the subject.
Unfortunately, there is widespread public (and media) confusion about what deforestation is and isn’t. From a dictionary point of view, it would be easy to conclude that deforestation is simply about removing trees, and that reforestation is about growing them back again. That’s what the commonly displayed images all show: a stark clear-cut, or a young green spruce stretching skyward.
